Agency Background

(Nah-thee-fa) Nathifa Dance Company was established 1992 by Artistic Director LaVondia Gail Bryant-Square a native of Birmingham, Al raised in Brooklyn New York.  She moved to back to Birmingham in 1986. While living here she discovered the lack of divert culture and cultural dance. This concerned her and she felt that without multicultural of dance and art in our communities Birmingham wouldn’t gain that flavor that the arts brings to individual life and it would be hard for people to connected to the African American cultural.  She knew that this would have a negative effect on ones sense of identity and self-esteem.  Couple with her joy of working with people and her dancing abilities, she felt that through dance she could build positive self-images, self-esteem, self-confidence, pride and a closer spiritual relationship with people from all walks of life.  In April 2006 the organization established a non-profit 501c3 to help bring artistic value to young underserved people creating strong, confident community oriented individuals. Our organizations provide services for during & after school programs, day care centers, summer programs, libraries, community and church events as well as social entertainments throughout the city of Birmingham and its surround area through traditional West African dance.
